TRAIL SYSTEM

The 35km of Birchwood trails are groomed and maintained in the winter by a group of fantastic PNSC volunteers.

These trail enthusiasts generously contribute around 400 volunteer hours each winter, ensuring that the Birchwood trails remain accessible for everyone.

Whether you're a hiker, biker, skier, or snowshoer, we invite you to join PNSC and contribute to our mission of preserving the usability of Birchwood trails during the winter season.

Your membership not only bolsters trail advocacy but also enables PNSC to demonstrate to the RMWB the resident utilization of this winter trail network.

Join us in maintaining these exceptional trails!

DONT:

  • Damage the groomed trails

  • Walk on the classic track (humans and animals)

  • Leave poop bags on the trail

  • Use OHV on the trails

  • Do not leave behind a trace

  1. Always ski within your ability.

  2. Follow posted signs warning of dangers or trail closures.

  3. Give way to skiers coming downhill.

  4. Use caution when approaching steep or blind slopes and bridges.

  5. If you catch up with a skier in front, please reduce your speed as you pass on the left and then speed up again. Think of other users as yield signs. If you are approaching someone from behind its ok to shout “track” or “passing on your left” and the user in front is expected to yield or step off to the side of the trail and let the skier behind pass.

  6. If you fall, please try to get up and move off to the side of the trail to get out of the way of approaching skiers.  We all fall, but if you leave a massive dent or “sitz marks” try and fill them in.

  7. We all enjoy skiing on freshly groomed tracks, If you are skating, try to avoid the classic tracks. If you are going herringbone up a hill, please step out of the classic tracks.

  8. Hiking, snow shoeing or fat biking on the groomed ski trails is dangerous for all user and ruins the groomed trails. Please stay off to the side of the groomed trails.

  9. Do not disturb or attempt to feed wildlife.

  10. Be courteous and advise other users of any issues on the trail or wildlife encounters.

  11. Please help with maintenance- as you ski, remove small branches and debris/litter from the trails.

  12. Help maintain our pristine environment- do not litter and leave no trace.

  13. Don’t get caught in the dark. Be sure you know the length of the trail and have a reasonable estimate of how long it will take you to ski it.  Majority of the trails aren’t lit so make sure you bring a headlamp or some of light if you will be on the trails after sunset.

  14. Dogs are welcome but all dogs need to be leashed, owners must pick up dog poop, and dog keeper must to stick to their lane. Think before you sink! If snow is soft enough that the dog’s paw will sink in the groomed trail please find another area to walk your pup.

Report any hazards or OHV use to 780-743-7000 (RMWB Pulse Line)
